Pre-Writing Research

Pre-Writing Research
Get armed with the knowledge, to ensure that your proposition takes account of the commissioner’s requirements.

In conducting the pre-writing research, you may wish to consider the following:

  1.  The key features and requirements within the tender specification documentation
  2.  The strategic plans of the commissioning organisation
  3.  The political plans and strategies for the area in which the contract will operate
  4.  The recent history of the commission organisation
  5.  Any challenges the commissioning organisation faces that you or your proposition may be able to address
  6.  The democracy of the contract area
  7.  The geography of the contract area and any delivery challenges obstacles you may face

Armed with this knowledge, you are now in a strong position to ensure that your proposition and the writing within your tender generally is specific and informed and takes account of the commissioner’s requirements and the realities and challenges of delivering that particular contract.

The benefits of undertaking this research is that your tender appears more credible and more specific. It gets more confidence to be evaluated that you have thought things through and that you have realistically taken account of the particular features of their requirements and of the contract delivery.

Tender Research

In order to maximise the quality of your tender and ensure your writing is informed and relevant to the requirements of the commissioner, it is useful to invest time before you start writing in undertaking some background research.

We’re not talking about going out onto the streets with a clipboard and pen, but rather spending some time digging around to find out the strategic goals and objectives of the commissioning organisation or building up your knowledge of the catchment area in which the contract will operate, for example the demographics and the geography of the area.

Collectively, this information will help to show the evaluators that that your tender and its proposition are relevant to them and their requirements and that what you’re proposing is logistically feasible.
